Case Study

Strategic Planning – Natural Resource Management Sector

Introduction

A Natural Resource Management (NRM) organisation in regional Western Australia sought to review its strategic plan and recalibrate its focus to respond to current and future challenges in the sector. To support this process, BlueSalt Consulting was engaged as an external facilitator to guide key conversations and set a clear direction for the organisation.

Situation

The organisation needed a structured and collaborative approach to update its strategic plan. It faced the dual challenge of aligning internal stakeholders while anticipating future opportunities and challenges in the NRM sector. To achieve this, external facilitation was required to bring fresh perspectives and ensure productive engagement with leadership and staff.

Solution

Working closely with the CEO, BlueSalt Consulting began by exploring the current situation and anticipated landscape for the organisation. We then designed and facilitated two targeted half-day workshops with the board and senior staff. These workshops provided a platform to:

  • Reflect on the organisation’s achievements and existing strategic priorities.
  • Identify key challenges and opportunities shaping the future of the NRM sector.
  • Set clear direction and focus areas for the strategic planning process.

Following these sessions, BlueSalt Consulting provided a concise summary report to inform the organisation’s in-house strategic planning process, ensuring a clear roadmap for further development.

Outcome

The organisation was well-positioned to develop a strategic plan with strong buy-in from internal stakeholders. The facilitated process ensured alignment on priorities and accounted for emerging opportunities and challenges in the NRM sector. This set the foundation for a focused and forward-looking strategic direction that would guide the organisation’s efforts into the future.
